First of all, we need to specify the kind of legal marriage recognized in Italy: civil or religious. Our country also allows for the recognition of same-sex relationships, the so-called civil unions. A civil union gives the couple rights similar to those of a marriage.

What documents do you need to get married in Italy?

- a valid passport or European National ID card
- original or certified copy of birth certificate
- divorce papers or death certificate if you have been previously married and divorced or widowed
- a marriage Nulla Osta (certificate of no impediments) that you can request in the Consulate or Embassy of your country in Italy
- an Atto Notorio signed by two witnesses (a declaration of marriage intent submitted to the civil register)
Moreover, the ceremony requires two witnesses who are more than 18 years old.
